Places to Visit

The Dargah Sharif: It is one of the most sacred places and forms a major attraction of Ajmer. The Dargah Sharif is located at the foot of a barren hill in the old part of the town and is visited by people of all faiths. It is actually the tomb of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti who came to Ajmer from Persia in 1192. The Mughal Emperor Humayun completed the construction of the shrine and the Nizam of Hyderabad added its massive gate. There are two mosques in courtyard one built by Akbar and the other by Shahjahan. The saint's tomb with a marble dome is in the center of the second courtyard and is surrounded by a silver platform. The Urs Mela held here in the seventh month of the lunar calendar is an occasion not to be missed.

Ana Sagar Lake: You can visit this artificial lake on your tour to Ajmer. This Lake was created in the 12th century by damming up River Luni. On the bank of the Lake is the pleasant park, the Daulat Bagh containing a series of marble pavilions erected in 1637 by Shahjahan. Here one can hire boats and enjoy fine views from the hill beside the park.

Taragarh Fort: Taragarh Fort lies about 3 kms beyond the Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra mosque. The fort was built by Ajaipal Chauhan, the town's founder and commands a superb view over the city. It was the site of much the military activity during the Mughal period and was later used as a sanatorium by the British.

Nasiyan Temple: Visit the Nasiyan Temple on your tour to Ajmer. This Red Temple is a Jain temple built in the 19th century. Its double storey hall contains a fascinating series of large, gilt wooden figures from Jain mythology that depict the Jain concept of the ancient world.
