The city of Jodhpur is situated at the edge of the Thar Desert and forms the heart of the desert state of Rajasthan. The city was once the capital of the Marwar state and is the second largest city of Rajasthan. It is an island of marble palaces, decked off from the desert by an immense wall, with eight gates facing different directions.
It was founded in 1459 A.D. by Rao Jodha, the chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs who claimed to be descendants of Rama. The city dominated by the massive Mehrangarh fort on a rocky hill is charming with its wealth of historic attractions and colorful markets, which specializes in antiques. Location: Located on the edge of the Thar Desert, Jodhpur has Jaisalmer on its west, Barmar, Jalor and Pali on its south, Bikaner on its north, and Nagaur on the eastern side.

How to reach
The airport, 5km from the center of the city, is served by domestic flights from different cities of India. The main railway station is in the south of the city, 2km west of the state bus stand. State buses from all over the state and further field pull into the bus stand.
By Air:Regular flights connect Jodhpur directly to Delhi, Mumbai, Udaipur and Jaipur. Almost all major domestic airlines have their offices here.
By Rail:
Jodhpur is directly connected to most of the destinations in India by a good network of trains. The booking office is on Station Road, between the railway station and Sojati Gate. However, if you wish to place yourself in the lap of luxury, Palace on Wheels is waiting for you at the Delhi Cant Station every Saturday.
By Road:
Frequent Rajasthan State Transport buses connect Jodhpur to other places of Rajasthan and the neighboring states.
Tourist attractions: For a luxury Rajasthan vacation visit the city of Jodhpur where the major tourist attraction is the Mehrangarh Fort situated at an altitude of about 125 meters. This fort is spread over an area of 5 sq. km in the heart of the city of Jodhpur. Besides being a landmark in Jodhpur, Mehrangarh fort is a must visit for all the tourists. The fort has seven gates of which the noted ones are the Jayapol, built by Maharaja Man Singh in 1806; Fatehpol or the Victory Gate built by Maharaja Ajit Singh; and the Lohapol or the Iron Gate.Jaswant Thada in Jodhpur is a white marble memorial built in memory of Maharaja Jaswant II in 1899. You can visit the majestic Umaid Bhawan a part of which has been converted into a hotel and remaining part as a museum. About 8 km from Jodhpur is another place to visit Mandore. This ancient capital of Marwar has cenotaphs of the Jodhpur rulers. The beautiful gardens with high rock terraces make it a popular picnic spot with the tourists to Jodhpur.
